Hydrogen – the puzzle piece for a global energy revolution
Hydrogen technology plays a central role on the road to climate-neutral industries, both from an ecological and an economic perspective. But, when it comes to implementing this technology, complex technical issues arise. These relate in particular to the production, transportation, storage and use of hydrogen. Endress+Hauser provides answers that pass the practical test: With innovative and reliable measurement technology, the family-owned company supports its customers in ensuring smooth processes and maximum efficiency along the entire hydrogen value chain. On the path to decarbonizing industry The potential of hydrogen is enormous. Green hydrogen in particular offers the opportunity to significantly advance decarbonization in the coming years and considerably reduce CO₂ emissions. If you want to use hydrogen, you should look into its production, which is primarily carried out by water electrolysis. With this, water (H₂O) splits into its components hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂). If only renewable electricity is used for this process, it is referred to as green hydrogen, which is completely CO₂-free. There are also other types of hydrogen: Blue hydrogen is produced by steam reforming, whereby the resulting CO₂ is captured and stored. Turquoise hydrogen is produced during methane pyrolysis, which releases solid carbon instead of CO₂. Gray hydrogen, on the other hand, which is also produced by steam reforming natural gas, causes direct CO₂ emissions. Currently, the global hydrogen demand of around 90 mil lion tonnes is covered almost exclusively by gray hydrogen. Only a fraction of the volume is green hydrogen. Mean while, more and more countries are focusing on expanding production in order to achieve climate targets. Companies are joining forces to drive the market ramp-up of electrolysis technology. This is necessary in order to be able to produce the required quantities of gas by the turn of the century. From a niche topic to the heart of industry Endress+Hauser supports research institutes such as the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden Württemberg (ZSW) in the development and implementa tion of advanced solutions for hydrogen production. As part of the collaboration with ZSW, Endress+Hauser provided over 40 measuring instruments to ensure safe monitoring of critical process points in hydrogen production. These include devices such as the Prowirl F200 vortex flowmeter, the Memosens CLS16E digital conductivity sen sor and the iTHERM Moduline TM131 temperature sensor, which cover a wide range of requirements – from liquid analysis through to monitoring flow, temperature, pressure and level.

With the help of this expertise, ZSW was recently able to successfully transfer a modular alkaline electrolysis demonstrator from test operation to regular operation. Endress+Hauser also relies on innovative Heartbeat Technology to further optimize process efficiency and avoid potential issues such as quality changes or pressure drops at an early stage. This allows for continuous self-diagnosis of the appliances and supports long-term safe and efficient operational management through predictive maintenance measures. “The trend, particularly with PEM electrolysers, is to measure direct para- meters for stack service life. In addition, hydrogen quality is becoming increasingly important – 99.999% can only be achieved if you have the water treatment and the process under control.” Jens Hundrieser, Regional Industry Manager In addition to alkaline electrolysis (AEL), proton exchange membrane electrolysis (PEM) is an important process, such as that used by the hydrogen company Quest One (formerly H-TEC Systems). Precise measuring instruments from Endress+Hauser are also used here, such as the Coriolis F300 thermal mass flowmeter. The FMP51 level sensor and the Cerabar PMP51B pressure transmitter also ensure safe and reliable control of the gas separators. In the future, new technologies such as high-temperature electrolyzers will also play a greater role, which will require even more sophisticated measurement technology. With its precise instruments, Endress+Hauser is well positioned to meet the growing demands of hydrogen technology and therefore bridge the gap to a climate-neutral industry. Sustainable use of water as a resource In addition to the technical requirements for an electrolyzer, a considerable volume of water is also needed to produce hydrogen. For example, nine kilograms of ultrapure water are required to produce one kilogram of hydrogen. In water-scarce, particu larly dry regions, seawater is therefore used instead of fresh

and surface water. For one kilogram of hydrogen, around 30 kilograms of seawater must therefore be treated using reverse osmosis. To avoid wasting this valuable resource, it is crucial to use precise measurement technology in the upstream processes of electrolysis. This ensures that effi ciency is monitored, cleaning or regeneration is initiated in good time, and the optimum water quality for electrolysis is guaranteed. Focus on quality assurance After the production of hydrogen, the focus shifts to quality assurance and then to safe transportation. At the outlet of the electrolysis cells, the hydrogen must be continuously checked for purity to ensure efficient further processing. Modern optical analyzers measure the trace oxygen content and trace moisture in real time to ensure that the hydrogen meets the required specifications. Depending on the infrastructure, the hydrogen can then be transported via repurposed natural gas pipelines, blended systems or newly constructed pipelines. Advanced technologies such as TDLAS technology from Endress+Hauser are used here, which minimize the risk of corrosion in the pipelines with the help of real-time measurements of specific molecules. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) are an alternative method for storing and transporting hydrogen over long

measurement at the outlet.” Jens Hundrieser, Regional Industry Manager
Key element for the industry of tomorrow Endress+Hauser is already focusing on the use of green hydrogen, for example for the production of e-ammonia or e-methanol, where it serves as a central raw material for the production of fertilizers and chemicals. In the steel industry, too, hydrogen is increasingly replacing coke in the blast furnace process, thereby avoiding CO₂ emissions. In refineries, it is used to remove sulfur from petroleum products and produce low-sulfur fuels. The combination of pioneering technology, comprehensive expertise and a focus on sustainability makes Endress+Hauser an indispensable partner in the transfor mation towards a climate-neutral industry. With a view to the increasing importance of hydrogen as a key element for the industry of tomorrow, the company is positioning itself as a driving force for a green, emission-free future.
distances. These compounds act like a sponge that absorbs hydrogen through chemical reactions and releases it again when required. The advantage of LOHC systems is that they can transport hydrogen safely and efficiently without requiring any special adaptation of the existing infra structure, such as tankers or pipelines. This makes them a practical and flexible solution for distributing hydrogen over long distances. However, there is one major challenge: High temperatures are generated during both the absorp tion (hydrogenation) and release (dehydrogenation) of hydrogen from LOHC. In order to control these processes safely and efficiently, several measuring points are required to monitor key parameters such as flow rate, level and temperature. Endress+Hauser offers a wide range of products, services and solutions, including Coriolis, thermal and vortex flowmeters, which help to optimize hydrogen based processes. Precise level gages also ensure reliable monitoring of the storage tanks. Sustainable hydrogen storage One particular advantage of hydrogen is its ability to make surplus renewable energy available in the long term: Surpluses from wind and solar energy can be stored in the form of hydrogen and converted back into electricity by reverse electrolysis when required. This makes hydrogen a promising building block for climate protection and the sustainable use of renewable energies. Another advantage is the versatile use of hydrogen in existing infrastructures. In gas turbines, it can be used either as a pure fuel or in blends with natural gas to gener ate clean energy. This option not only offers efficient inte gration of renewable energies but also makes a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions. An outstanding example of this is the Long Ridge Energy (LRE) power plant in the USA, which is the first in the world to demonstrate the usability of admixed hydrogen in power plant operation. Thanks to process solutions from Endress+Hauser, it will be demonstrated that fire risks can be effectively controlled using reliable measurement technology. Salt caverns are a particularly safe solution with a high storage capacity for the long-term storage of hydrogen. These natural, stable cavities, which are created by flushing out salt domes, are ideal for storing large quantities of hydrogen. This means that surplus green hydrogen from renewable energy sources can be temporarily stored during periods of high production and retrieved when needed, for example for power generation or industrial use. Endress+Hauser also plays a key role in this area by developing a wide range of high-precision measurement technologies to make these storage processes efficient and safe.

Innovations in measurement technology have been key to advancing production methods in the process industry in recent years. They are helping to boost the efficiency and productivity of plants and make them safer. Not least, modern measuring instruments help to make production more sustainable, e.g. by making it possible to detect points of high energy consumption or to optimize production processes. Hydrogen transport using containers Green hydrogen plays a key role in the energy transition. In this context, an adequate hydrogen infrastructure with transport away from the pipeline network is a critical component. We assume that applications for supplying hydrogen filling stations and rural areas in Germany in particular will represent a significant market. Endress+Hauser is therefore taking part in a funding project to develop a smart container for the
multimodal logistics of green hydrogen. Endress+Hauser supplies measurement technology for pressure and tem perature, automation for operation and data telemetry, as well as a cloud connection for remote monitoring. Creating new solutions In many other fields too, there are new, creative and, above all, very real solutions that we have co-developed with customers and partners for their sometimes very specific and unique challenges. To give you a preview and maybe even an idea or two, we would like to show you a few examples.

Connectivity is created with an adapter and edge device
Simultaneous data transmission Our measuring devices already have numerous digital interfaces, e.g. 4 to 20 mA HART, PROFIBUS and PROFINET. Many sensors are also available with Bluetooth® and WiFi interfaces. With the new FieldPort SWA50 adapter, existing 4 to 20 mA sensors can be connected in accordance with the Namur Open Architecture (NOA) concept without placing any strain on existing communication channels or interfering with the system architecture. Our portfolio is supplemented with edge devices and gateways. Simple adapter solution The new NOA-compliant FieldPort SWA50 adapter brings existing metrology equipment in analog networks quickly and cost-effectively into the cloud via gateways and edge devices. The wireless adapter connects existing 4 to 20 mA HART field devices to digital services easily by converting all HART signals into wireless signals. Either via Bluetooth® or WirelessHART, all HART signals from field devices can be transmitted to the cloud in parallel to the measured value – even those from third-party manufacturers.
Highlights • Digitalization of existing and brownfield systems • Connection without interfering with existing system architectures • Data transmission via second communication channel • Simple transmission of analog signals thanks to adapter solution • Immediate access to measurement and diagnostic parameters via mobile devices Application Industry 4.0 concepts can be implemented comparatively easily in the latest generation of process plants. In the digitalization of existing or brownfield plants, however, the challenge is to ensure connectivity of data from field devices. This is because, for the successful digitalization of plants, the connectivity of the data suppliers is the key element. The solution: transmission of additional digital data from the field level in parallel to the measured data via a second communication channel.
Our range of system components can be found on p. 70 onwards.

The next evolutionary stage in digital field instrumentation with Profinet-APL Ethernet-APL: easy, quick, digital
Highlights • Energy and data via two-wire cable • Ethernet speed of 10 Mbit/s full-duplex • Explosion protection with intrinsic safety for all zones and divisions • Polarity-independent connection terminals, quick and easy to install • Open to any type of industrial Ethernet protocol • Easy to replace device • Easy to integrate the device diagnostics into control and guidance systems • Quick and easy access to all device parameters via web server • NAMUR Open Architecture (NOA) via a second channel Application During planning and operation, process plant operators strive for efficient engineering and reliable production quality, rapid start-up and fast commissioning. Working with plant equipment, especially field instrumen tation, built around older technologies like HART or PROFIBUS is often a complex issue. There is increasing demand for higher data performance but also for driving down costs for devices and system integration. Existing technologies With digitalization, the commonly used fieldbus technology PROFIBUS has been pushed to its limit for some years now – due to a low bandwidth, a lack of speed and complicated protocol conversions. This is similarly the case with the even more dated analog 4 to 20 mA measurement technology with HART protocol.
HART is dogged by even greater performance losses as soon as the equipment is expected to produce high data rates for automation tasks. The newly introduced APL (advanced physical layer) for industrial Ethernet protocols, such as PROFINET or even EtherNet/IP, has seen a kind of paradigm shift. The new technology also makes it possible to use the aforementioned protocols directly in the harsh environment of process automation. Ethernet-APL is an advanced physical layer for Ethernet. The technology fulfills all requirements of process plants and as good as brings the benefits of Ethernet into the field of process automation. Ethernet-APL enables complete digitalization in the process industry and in all life cycle phases.
